Some codes of practice suggest that multi-span bridges can be safely modelled as a series of single spans provided the piers are 'stocky'. Here, ring2.0 - being used to rapidly explore a variety of scenarios in advance of an intrusive investigation - demonstrated that this is not always the case.

Single Span Bridge
Very short span bridges are often vulnerable to the damaging effects of excessive live loads. ring2.0 was here used to identify likely critical failure modes. It was found that all likely failure modes involved sliding, rather than a standard '4 hinge failure mechanism'.
